Launching a Culture of Giving

The University of Ottawa had a bold vision to replace their traditional Spring campaign with the school’s first institutional Giving Day – and they knew just who to partner with to make it happen.

We loved the idea and jumped on board immediately. While their Spring appeals performed well, we knew a dedicated Giving Day could do something their existing campaigns couldn’t—create urgency, build community, and give donors a shared moment to rally around collective impact. More importantly, this initiative could establish a stronger culture of philanthropy across campus.

As uOttawa’s agency of record since 2022, we’d already helped them strengthen connections with donors through direct mail, email, digital ads, and telemarketing. They trusted in our partnership to bring this new idea to life!

Strategic Planning for Higher Education Giving Day Success

We were so excited to shape uOttawa’s first Giving Day from the ground up! Our approach was driven by three core principles: activating donor identities, authentic storytelling through real program impact, and multi-channel integration.

First, we used our existing knowledge of this organization and its audiences to identify key identities we wanted to mobilize. This became the creative framework of the campaign, grounding it in who donors believe themselves to be when they engage with uOttawa.   We incorporated uOttawa’s campaign messaging that fostered connectivity, inviting donors to join something bigger, to help create “infinite possibilities” for students. That language positioned donors as co-creators of student success.

Second, we know donors give more generously when they can direct their support toward something personally meaningful. So, we proposed something unique for uOttawa: a Giving Guide brochure that showcased specific opportunities to make an impact across campus. Donors could discover and give to, unique programs they cared about, whether that was student mental health, Indigenous initiatives, or cutting-edge research. To really bring the work to life, the Giving Guide told authentic stories about programs making tangible differences for students.

For a multi-channel approach, we coordinated every touchpoint to reinforce the same message and create multiple pathways to giving. House donors received a letter from the Provost and Vice-President Academic Affairs and Giving Guide in the mail. We helped to script a telemarketing campaign that uOttawa ran internally, ensuring phone conversations echoed the written appeal. And we collaborated closely with uOttawa’s digital team and their web vendor to create a Giving Day website where donors could browse projects and support multiple funds in one transaction.

Giving Day Campaign Results: 360% Revenue Growth

The numbers exceeded every expectation we had for this campaign. Revenue jumped 360% compared to the previous year’s Spring campaign. The average gift grew 180% over than the prior year’s Spring campaign and 130% higher than the overall average gift for the previous fiscal year.

uOttawa now has a proven model for building community and inspiring collective action. Donors connected with the university in new ways, exploring opportunities to make impact that resonated.

Multi-Year Giving Day Strategy and Donor Retention

We’ve already taken learnings from 2025 and applied them to uOttawa’s second Giving Day in 2026.

As we led uOttawa through their second Giving Day, we came back with strategic evolutions. We proposed adding matching gift incentives to amplify urgency and introduced a pre-campaign momentum strategy. This early outreach to major donors built excitement before the public launch.

And this evolution in approach paid off: uOttawa’s second Giving Day in 2026 raised almost double the first-year total!  This shows that the culture of giving we helped create is taking hold.
